SixApart Announces MovableType 4, Goes Open Source
SixApart today unveiled its next generation blogging platform, MovableType 4, and is open sourcing the software. The new release, now in beta, sports more than 50 new features the company hopes will put it on a competitive edge with other corporate blog platforms.
MovableType, which this very blog you’re reading is published on, is the granddaddy of blogging platforms and once reigned supreme in its time. That is until an upstart open source platform called WordPress came along and took the online world by storm. SixApart hopes it can make up for lost ground by reaching out to developers and making its software free. They’re moving in the right direction, but WordPress is now a major contender they will have to confront.

MovableType is free again! That is some pleasant news. I was devoted to MT myself, until they started charging and then I too converted to the WordPress movement.
Almost makes me consider switching back. Is it worth the work? Heh!

If this blog is published using MoveableType, why am I seeing a “http://www.elitistsnob.com/wordpress/wp-content/mtorg_smallheader_left.png” link when I hover over the Moveable Type graphic above? Hmmmmm…

I feel you on this one. I *adored* MT until I discovered WordPress about a year and a half ago. I switched and never looked back. It’s so versatile and light, and because of it my coding skills have *vastly* improved.
I had heard a rumor that MT was going open-source, but this is the first verification of it I’ve found. Yay! I’d love to give them a try again!
(By the way – LOVELY site!)

Silly wabbit. Movable Type isn’t the grand daddy of blogging platforms. That honor goes to Userland Software’s (of Dave Winer fame) Manila and Radio (I think). Then there was Blogger. And CityDesk. And many other blogging platforms before MT came on the scene. MT just did many things a lot better than their competitors.
Just giving credit where credit is due
