Chris Pirillo is dumping Vista. The well known Windows enthusiast and long time blogger has had enough with the many numerous issues afflicting this new Windows release, and is “upgrading” to XP. He shares his experiences in a blog entry, outlining the reasons for his decision.
He writes…
Sorry, I… I gave Vista a real chance. I just can’t use it as my primary OS anymore. It’s NOT horrible at its core (by any stretch of the imagination). If all of your hardware and software are fully baked, you’re good to go - but that’s not the world I live in. I will continue to recommend Windows Vista for some users, mind you. I wish I could take the best parts of Vista and bring them back with me to XP. I’m still more than willing to help Microsoft improve Windows and get the message out to users, but I simply can’t sacrifice my own time and productivity without benefits in clear sight.
His experiences largely mirror my own, particularly his assessment of Vista’s state of being as an OS that feels like its still Beta code. That’s exactly what I have said as well. Microsoft released this product too soon. In stark contrast, Windows XP was so stable during beta stages of development that I was using it as my primary operating system back when it will still in Beta 2 stage. The quality was that good. Unfortunately Vista doesn’t share that same level of stability even in its final release.
I have encountered many numerous issues that have me pondering a similar switch. In my case I am a multi-platform user, booting between Mac and Windows, so when Vista drives me up the wall I simply use my right-brain (the Mac). But for someone using Vista as their sole platform, the situation can be untenable.
There are moments in life when the challenges of a busy schedule, encumberences, distraction, and stupidity all converge at one terrible moment resulting in tragedy. That is what happened to me last fall during my morning commute. As I hurried out the door with hands and arms full of gadgets and wares, embarking in my vehicle, I failed to notice that I had inadvertently dropped one important item on the ground.
Having sped off for work and returning later in the day, I noticed a small metallic object laying in the driveway near where my truck is normally parked. “What the heck is that?” I half wondered. No sooner had that inquisitive thought entered my simian brain when I came to a horrible realization…“Oh my God, it’s my iPod!”. Yes, that shiny piece of metal laying lifeless on the pavement was my dear departed music player, crushed by the full weight of my Ford Ranger. Obviously the poor little fellow had fallen out of my grasp as I was entering my truck and had landed directly in the path of my tires, which did a fantastic job of making the already slim iPod a lot thinner than designed.
So, that’s the story. My fifth generation iPod has been gone for about three months now and I have fallen back to an ancient fourth generation iPod Photo. Waiting for the day when Apple will announce a new and improved model worthy of my Ben Franklins. Hopefully soon.
The name Hamad Darwish may not be a household name, but if you are using Windows Vista chances are you’re already familiar with his work. Microsoft commissioned this well known Flickr photographer to shoot high resolution imagery for inclusion in Vista as desktop wallpapers. So the background you’re probably using now as your desktop is the work of Hamad.
Surprisingly a number of spectacular images he produced for Vista didn’t make the cut, and were not included in the final release. Hamad is now making these previously unreleased images available for download on his personal website, which I encourage everyone to visit.
These desktops are stunning, especially the first selection below which is my personal favorite.
I have a dark secret. A secret so ignominious that its revelation will bring terrible shame and ridicule from my peers. Confession is good for the soul. My secret? I like ZUNE. There…I said it. Yes, you heard me correctly.
Next month is my birthday, so what better way to celebrate than by sticking it to the man. The “man” in this case being the overlords of the colluded music industry that rape consumers with every CD purchase. This March, send these greedy bastards a message by boycotting all legal music consumption, or better yet select only independent artists for your listening experience. Screw the big labels.
Does anyone remember Burger Chef? This fast food chain was started by brothers Frank and Dave Thomas (creator of Wendy’s) back in the 1960’s, and was later acquired by General Foods as an experimental venture into the fast food market, which ultimately failed. The chain was later sold to Hardee’s who then converted the franchise into Hardee’s Restaurants. Bet you didn’t know that.
Burger Chef existed long before my time. I was only a wee little lad when this business was in operation, but I do vaguely remember the Burger Chef that existed in my old hometown.
Anyway, I stumbled upon this video on YouTube for a Burger Chef Star Wars ad that once aired on TV in 1977, which should give you an idea of how old this chain was.
Who can forget this charming ad from a red-eyed pothead Ellen Feiss, endorsing Macs, as part of Apple’s ill fated “Switch” campaign. I’ve seen this ad so many times and yet it continues to make me laugh each time. *sigh*
